"Lots of people rely heavily on your food taste." -Pam Hochman (my wife). Do you have someone in your life who you find yourself always calling when you need a restaurant recommendation in the Excelsior district or in Chicago? Perhaps you need ideas for a last minute dinner reservation on your spouse's birthday or a place to take a group of kids for pizza in San Bruno? In my circle, I am that someone. I've been that someone since high school. Friends text me while walking down Clement St. asking for the best dim sum. My sister-in-law calls me from New York asking for the name of the Korean fried chicken place in Queens. Strangers assume that I'm in the restaurant business when they meet me because it's the topic that I always use to break the ice. "Oh, you're from Sunnyvale? Have you ever been to Komal Vilas, the South Indian place with no utensils?"
As much as I love giving people a good restaurant recommendation, I love getting one even more. The excitement of trying a place for the first time is, for me, right up there with sex, drugs and rock and roll.
